Today I am sharing a skirt that was inspired by the sailor features of The Junebug Dress.
And if you have made "The Starboard Skirt" before, you will find lots of similarities and trust me when I say it's just as easy! {Love that.} And it can be made in ANY size.....hip, hip hooray!
If you want to make one here is what you need to do:
You first need to cut your pieces exactly like The Starboard Skirt. You will need a front and a back. We are adding a waistband to this skirt.....that are each 4 inches in height with one the same length as your skirt front (after you put in the pleat) and one the same length as your skirt back. (You will see in the picture below.)
Here is the one difference with the pleat. We are doing a box pleat, which is the same as an inverted pleat on the back of the skirt. The Starboard tutorial will show you how to make an inverted pleat. You just need to make it on the WRONG side of the fabric this time....which will give you a Box Pleat on the RIGHT side of the fabric. Confused? I hope not. If you are, email me. I sometimes just wish we could all have a sewing class together....
The rest of the supplies are:
* 4 buttons--I used fabric covered buttons, but you can use any kind you wish. (I left them out of the picture..) and
And you now have a straight and darling pencil skirt!
One funny story (as if this post isn't long enough), I used denim that I had thrifted that was brand new....and probably from the 1950's because it is seriously as stiff as a board (really....I broke a denim needle on it.) After I was done taking a picture I put it down on the floor and the skirt literally stood up....that is how thick the denim was. And, it scared Hannah to death. She walked in and thought that there was a person standing there.
So I really think that this little number is going to be completely indestructable. I should make my 4th grader some jeans out of it....that is where I need the invincibility denim!

love it!
ReplyDeleteThis is so adorable! Thanks for the how-to--it's now going on my never-ending, never-shrinking list of things I must try! :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! That is such a cute style! And I love that it stood up on its own . . . now THAT is some quality denim!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I am sooo making this. For me!
ReplyDeleteThis skirt is so great! I love the marine style it has. My husband really likes the pink details on it (he is very much into details, and pink is very nice for this skirt even in his opinion).
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for this inspiration! :-)
this is so adorable!!! love the piping and buttons!
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty and expensive looking!
ReplyDeleteLove the PR&P make over too. :)
Too bad I'm prego or I would make one for myself- cute idea!

Hello :)
ReplyDeleteI'm making this for my daughter for her first day of Middle School (she adores anything vintage or with a vintage-look...I also made her a Starboard skirt a couple of weeks ago..it fast became a favorite).
Just curious...my box pleat is smaller than the one shown on your skirt...I've followed the measurements exactly (I'm an experienced sewer) ~ any ideas?
Thank you so much!
Kirsty H
Hmmm.....let me check my measurements again.
DeleteThanks, I'd appreciate your feedback :) Hope you are enjoying your weekend!
DeleteKirsty,
DeleteI checked the measurements and they are exactly the same as in the tutorial. The only thing I can think of, is this pleat was made on a size 4 skirt and on an older girl (with a bigger waist) it might look smaller. Do you think that could be it?
To make it bigger you would need to add to the front piece dimensions and then make the box pleat bigger....does that make sense?
Thank you soooo much! It definitely does make sense. My daughter is 11, that said, she's a very tall skinny bean who could still wear a 5T comfortably in the waist, but needs a size 12-14 for length (wonder why I make her clothes? haha) I thought about adding to the front piece to make a bigger pleat...I might do that with the next one. Thanks again...LOVE reading your blog and being inspired :) Keep rocking!
