A Denim Pencil Skirt

This week at Project Run and Play, we are remixing the Junebug Pattern by Jess at Craftiness Is Not Optional.  Liz is sharing her "I wish it were Junebug Dress" over there today and I am sharing my skirt that was inspired by Jess' dress here.  {And there is still time to sew along.....with fabric on the line for the winner!  So, get sewing!}

Today I am sharing a skirt that was inspired by the sailor features of The Junebug Dress.

And if you have made "The Starboard Skirt" before, you will find lots of similarities and trust me when I say it's just as easy!  {Love that.}  And it can be made in ANY size.....hip, hip hooray!

If you want to make one here is what you need to do:

You first need to cut your pieces exactly like The Starboard Skirt.  You will need a front and a back.  We are adding a waistband to this skirt.....that are each 4 inches in height with one the same length as your skirt front (after you put in the pleat) and one the same length as your skirt back. (You will see in the picture below.)

Here is the one difference with the pleat.  We are doing a box pleat, which is the same as an inverted pleat on the back of the skirt.  The Starboard tutorial will show you how to make an inverted pleat.  You just need to make it on the WRONG side of the fabric this time....which will give you a Box Pleat on the RIGHT side of the fabric.  Confused?  I hope not.  If you are, email me.  I sometimes just wish we could all have a sewing class together....

The rest of the supplies are:
 * 4 buttons--I used fabric covered buttons, but you can use any kind you wish. (I left them out of the picture..) and

And you now have a straight and darling pencil skirt!

One funny story (as if this post isn't long enough), I used denim that I had thrifted that was brand new....and probably from the 1950's because it is seriously as stiff as a board (really....I broke a denim needle on it.)  After I was done taking a picture I put it down on the floor and the skirt literally stood up....that is how thick the denim was.  And, it scared Hannah to death.  She walked in and thought that there was a person standing there. 

So I really think that this little number is going to be completely indestructable.  I should make my 4th grader some jeans out of it....that is where I need the invincibility denim!
