Skirts! They can be super easy to sew, and it doesn't take much more effort to add a little something special. My little girl loves pockets, especially when they are roomy enough for lots of treasures. Today I'll show you how to make a sweet doily pocket to add to any skirt.
First, take a doily (mine came from the dollar bin at Michael's) and cut it evenly in half. Cut a backing piece for each pocket out of fabric, using the doily as a template for the size and shape.
Baste the backing piece around the curved edge only, using a 1/4 inch seam. Using the seam as your guide, fold the raw edges to the inside and pin in place. Top stitch to secure.
Pin the doily on top of the backing piece, pinning along the straight edge. The doily should now be slightly larger than the backing. Stitch across the straight edge, joining the two pieces together along the top only.
Add a box pleat to the top center of the pocket.
Enclose the raw edges with a piece of bias tape.
Sew the pocket to your skirt, stitching through both layers of the pocket (the doily and the backing). To make your stitches less noticeable, change your thread to match the doily and bias tape (I used red thread around the curve of the pocket, and white thread on the corners of the bias tape). The scalloped edges of the doily should remain loose.
And that's it! It's an easy way to dress up a simple elastic waistband skirt.
Thanks again to the Simple Simon girls for having me! I think you'll blow your skirt goal out of the water.

Love this! Very similar to some doily pockets I did during "vintage may" using those same doilies from michael's! Adds such a nice little touch! Www.Buzzmills.typepad.com/blog/2012/05/doily-pockets.html
