Scrappy Block Bonus Quilt

I have piles of scraps. Bins of scraps. Buckets of scraps.
So many scraps that even my scraps have scraps!
And because I’m always working on new projects the scraps just keep piling up.

So for the past two years I always have a scrap project going alongside my new works in progress.
And, sewing up mismatched blocks and turning them into quilts is one of my favorite scrap projects.

Next to my sewing machine I have a bin full of scraps cut into 2.5″ x 2.5″ squares for stitching together as I’m chain piecing through other blocks.

It is surprising how quickly rows of squares are created…and how many finished blocks I have completed each time I sit down to sew.

This particular quilt is the first of a series of these quilts that I have completed.
Next week I will share the tutorial for making the simple blocks.
They really are quick sews and look fun with any kind of fabric.

And yes, I do mean any kind of fabric.
The photos shown here are of the first of these quilts that I created using only quilting cotton…but there have been many more using a variety of scrap fabrics that include: denim, terry cloth, velvet, and flannel.

I even use scraps to create the binding which makes these quilts true bonus quilts.
I love them.
Not only do I get to whittle away at my scrap bin BUT I always have extra quilts on hand to give away to someone who could use some handmade comfort.
It is a win win.
Long live the bonus quilt…and long live scrappy quilting.
