Sewing projects

I have been doing some sewing projects for the kiddos lately, which is a restful thing. I don't get very long to sew with a 7 week old, but it still makes me happy.I made a dress for Hannie and some pants to match for Isaac. I hope to get a tie made for Aaron before Sunday but we'll see how it goes. I didn't have a pants' pattern that was small enough for Isaac's pants (and since I am cheap and didn't want to buy one) I traced a size 0-3 month pair I had and just went with it. I think for next ... View the Post

The Experiment

Chapter 1 in "The Art of Homemaking" defines the ideal homemaker by comparing her to a diamond. (I know, I know, just bear with me here...remember this book was written while my parents were still in grade school...) "Just as each diamond is cut a little differently in order to make many facets, so is each homemaker a distinct individual with her own special traits and talents. But in both diamonds and homemakers, certain qualities must be present if each is to sparkle brilliantly..."Ms. Hoole ... View the Post

$5 Friday…Quick Birthday Decorations

Tonight we are having a family birthday party for my little boy so I'm spending the day cooking and cleaning up a storm. However, I'm going to take a quick 5 minute break to post some super fun decorations I just started hanging up.I saw these decorations this morning on an awesome website called "creativejewishmom.com". (You should go check out her site..she's amazing.) Each decoration only takes 8 sheets of paper and just a few minutes to make. I whipped these up while my kids were eating ... View the Post

The Art of Homemaking

Awhile ago a ran across this little gem at a thrift store. Loving all things vintage (and kitchy) I bought it without question. That afternoon I unloaded my finds and added this piece of work onto one of my bookshelves and promptly forgot about it. There it sat, for months, until one night I couldn't sleep and was perusing my book shelves for a good read. And what a good read it was. This book was written in 1969 and is now out of print but it's advice on the art of homemaking is classic. Many ... View the Post

The Beginning of Autumn

This afternoon I spent my time doing something that marks, for me, the beginning of autumn. I put up my first batch of tomatoes. This batch I blanched and then froze---a much easier process than canning. The process:#1. Put tomatoes in boiling water for about 2 minutes (or until they look ready---they look ready when their skin starts to pull and they float on the surface)#2. Stick tomatoes in a pot (or bowl) of ice and water. (30 seconds is long enough but do whatever you like)#3. Pop the stem ... View the Post
