I know that I say this every week...but I think this is one of my most favorite thrifted items ever! It was at a garage sale and priced at $5.00, but I had to have it. I am in the middle of a sewing corner re-do (which I think is going to take forever...because I just keep changing my mind) and knew it would be a perfect place to store thread and thimbles. And I LOVE that it is made from old measuring sticks and rulers. Isn't it awesome?Liz and I were talking the other day...that we are those ... View the Post
Thrifted Thursday: On Mending….
Today I pulled out a dress Elizabeth bought last summer a thrift store. I love it. But it's damaged.Where the tears are combined with the type of fabric means that the mending is going to require my least favorite kind of sewing---hand-stitching. Bleck. Why do things have to wear out, break down, or loose their polish? I want the dress but it's going to take something I lack a lot of----patience---to get the dress back into wearable condition. Wouldn't it just be easier to hack it up and ... View the Post
Does Sewing Make Me A Sewer?
So Friday my mom ask me why I keep calling myself a sewer. A sewer? What the heck was she talking talking about? And then I saw on our blog "The best giveaway ever (at least for sewers it is)" Ahhhhh....when I am saying in my brain sew-er (as in one who sews) it is written out as sewer (like the collection of tubes through which waste is moved). So it got me to thinking...what do you call a person who sews?Recently I've seen this word a lot:sewistand there's nothing wrong with that ... View the Post
Heroes of Homemaking (at least to me they are…)
(The dishes the morning after a baby shower. Note here that I didn't take one picture at the shower---shameful---but I did take a picture of the dishes a day later ;) Liz is usually our resident expert of homemaking around here, but when I posted this post about sewing, I said I'd later share some thoughts about how I have learned (and continue to learn) about overcoming the mundane tasks of running a house and raising kids. But let's face some facts here. My house doesn't always ... View the Post
Life Lessons From the Sewing Machine
This dress was one of my Christmas presents this year....and it truly was one of my favorite gifts. It was a dress my mom wore in the late 50's as a junior bridesmaid. And since I am the sewer in the family (lucky me) she gave it to me. Sorry, if it looks a bit big on the dress form, it is. The dress is about a girls size 12 or so and it's pinned on a dress form that is a girls' size 6.My mom got this dress (and she even remembers that it cost around $40---a ton of money) as part of a bridal ... A small project and a question….
I am sharing a secret with you today.....I have never made a zipper bag. Ok. There. I have said it. It's a bit embarrassing, but totally and completely the truth. I have made tote bags, diaper bags, drawstring bags....and although I have put zipper in a lot of other things...I have never made a zippered bag. And why did no one ever tell me how quick and fun they are? Ok, you probably did, I just wasn't in the mood to listen.Well no longer. There will probably be a lot more of these ... View the Post
