The Art of Homemaking

The Art of Homemaking: On measuring up…

Do you ever have those weeks where you feel like you are failing everything?  The laundry is stacked like Mount Everest, everyone needs to be at different locations (with you) at the exact same time, there is no bread for lunches, and no one can find anything that they own?  Not my best days in the art of homemaking.  Well, that is my house this week... And weeks like these can get so overwhelming.  I am hoping that most of you can relate in some way.  How do you deal with days (or weeks) like ... View the Post

SNAP! Sewing Room Giveaway for YOU!

When liZ and I were approached about doing a Sewing Room at SNAP.....we were excited, nervous, thrilled and fearful all at the same time. What if we couldn't get sponsors?  What if no one comes?  And the what-ifs continued.....for months before the conference started. But as we emailed out for teachers, sponsors, fabrics, and sewing machines....some of our fears were set aside.  We knew the sewing community was fantastic, but little did we know how fantastic they were going to be. Saturday Sewing at Simple Simon Linky Party

Four years ago this month Elizabeth and I decided to try an experiment.  We decided that every week day for a month we would try to post a different project on my Simple Simon and Company blog (something used mainly for craft fairs) and see what would happen. At the time we weren't even sure if we could come up with projects for 20 whole days but we wanted to try.  So thus it began....and after 4 years not only haven't we run out of projects but we can't stop thinking of more!!! (Really...like ... View the Post

General· sewing· Thoughts

This is the story of my Golden Blinged Sewing Machine and how I fell in love with sewing.

This is my first sewing machine: Alright...so it wasn't a golden blinged sewing machine when I got it...but it is now. Here's the story: Years ago (and I mean almost 2 decades ago) when I was a newlywed my mom bought me a sewing machine (this sewing my machine as a matter of fact) for Christmas. And I HATED it.  REALLY HATED IT.  Like...I cried.  Why would my mom buy me such an archaic, repressive, stereotypical gift?  Me!  The girl who hated all things domestic...the girl who would rebelled ... On kitchens, appliances and family….

When we said goodbye to our first house last month, it was a bittersweet day. I knew that it was the right thing to do, but leaving it was so hard. We went around and took pictures of the kids in every room, had some good cries and also some good laughs....and the kids talked about what each of them had done in all of the rooms. But for me? I would undoubtedly say that this was the hardest room for me to leave. The kitchen. My first kitchen. I sometimes have a divided relationship with ... View the Post
