The Art of Homemaking: Putting the House to Bed

A few months back when Elizabeth and I were able listen to Daryl Hoole speak we took pages and pages of notes.  (She just had so many great things to say!)  And one of those things is what I've been working on this week. Mrs. Hoole says that before you go to bed you should put your house to bed.Basically that means before you go to bed straighten up your house and get it ready for a new day...put all dirty dishes in the dishwasher, pick up all toys, make sure laundry is folded and put away, ... Boys’ Week: A Shirt and a Lesson Learned.

For Boys' Week this week I was hoping to finish up the shirt that I was supposed to make Isaac for his Christmas outfit.  The shirt pattern was cut out and ready to go.  So, yesterday afternoon I sewed it up.....well, to this point.  And then I decided to try it on.Guess what?It is ginormica.  As in, huge.  As in, it might fit my ten-year old.  Okay the sleeves will probably be a bit short, but other than that it would totally fit him.  And it was cut out in the size 3.Lesson learned.  Next time ... Thrifted Thursday: The World’s Easiest Skirt Refashion with a Completely Unnecessary Tutorial

Awhile ago I was cleaning out some old clothing bins of mine (a never ending project it seems) when I ran across one that included a bunch of old skirts that I wore the first year or two I taught school.  They were long, frumpy, and totally from the turn of the century...back when I was partying like it was 1999. They ALL looked like this: Anyone else remember these beauties or am I just waaaay older than all of you are? (Wait, don't answer that.) I'll just pretend you remember these ... View the Post

It is our Wednesday at Riley Blake Designs and today we are showing you how to make this easy three-tiered skirt.  I have been seeing these types of skirts showing up in lots of high-end children's clothing lines and for lots of money.  They were actually some of the first skirts that I learned how to make and have been a favorite ever since. And, you can make your own, in any length and any size! Head over to Riley Blake to see the full tutorial... ~Elizabeth ... View the Post

Holidays and Chain Reactions

Holiday's, I love them but they have a tendency to get me all crazy---er, crazier than usual.   For instance this morning I was thinking it was Monday and clicked into Simple Simon to see what Elizabeth posted today only to realize that it is Tuesday...and my day to post ...and I had forgotten to put up my post...which reminded me I hadn't taken any pictures of my project...that I hadn't finished because I spent yesterday at the rec center swimming with my kids and the evening watching episodes ...
