Modern Madeline and zippers…

Liz showed you yesterday her story book characters (I happen to love the one of Simon laughing...) and today I am showing you mine, along with the tutorial for "when you don't want to use a zipper."  I think I made it sound more magical than what it really is...but I will share it today. One of my favorite books growing up were the Madeline series...I think because even from an early age I was obsessed with all things French.  I even read them again in French in high school. So, here is my ... View the Post

The Pigeon Shirts OR Silly Spring Shirts for Silly Kids

My kids think they are hilarious in their "The Pigeon Finds A Hot Dog" inspired t-shirts. At our house we love mo willem's pigeon books--all of them---but we especially love the interactions between the stubborn pigeon and the persistent little chick. (Mostly because it reminds me of daily interactions between Simon and Grace.) Awhile ago I thought it would be funny to make my two silly kids a set of pigeon and chick t-shirts and then when I saw that the sewing maven over at No Big Dill had a ... View the Post

Spring Fever: The cupcake skirt.

My five-year-old named it....I think she was hungry.  But we went with it. Are you ready for the Tiered skirt tutorial? Here's what you'll need for a girl's size 3-5:  (You will need to adjust for bigger or smaller sizes) *under skirt fabric--I used white cotton 15 inches by 45 inches (width of fabric) *fabrics for 4 layers -- I used half-yard for each layer (but you will have a couple inches left over---accessories!) *a marking pencil *a ruler Step 1 Sew your underskirt, ... (another sister-in-law's bouquet from last Spring--it was gorgeous)Both Liz (she posts as elizabeth evans) and I (I post as elizabeth--confusing, I know, sorry--we really do have the same names) were talking and we both have severe SPRING FEVER.....so for the month of March we are going to be having a month of SPRING FEVER. And then maybe Spring will come sooner instead of all the snow we have been getting lately.We have been brainstorming and have come up with some great projects to ... View the Post

$5 Friday· Dresses· sewing

$ 5 Friday: Another 70’s Dress.

I gave the preview a couple of days ago and now it's finished.  We had a FREEZING photo shoot, one cute and spunky girl, some balloons that were blowing everywhere.... and here are the results..... I used 1 yard of fabric from Hobby Lobby which was $4.76  and some of the scraps of white Kona cotton for the Peter Pan collar and the sleeve bands.  I also took out the zipper in the back (why are zippers so expensive?) and used a trick that I learned a while back....I will share it next ... Pattern cutting 101.

If you've never cut a pattern out before...this is for you! I chose a simple apron top pattern from Tuesday's pattern  post. It is simple and only has two parts so it won't be super complicated....but you can get some idea on how to cut out a pattern if you haven't ever done it.  And I am loving the apron top, I think it turned out very cute. I think I will be making a few more for Spring and Summer. Especially because they are truly a "nap time" project. Which is exactly what I need at the ... View the Post
