A little while ago RaeAnna invited us to take part in a series that poses the question "Why do you sew?". What a great question! What a fun series! But I'm not sure I have a fun answer.... You've all heard my story about crying the Christmas my mom gave my first sewing machine (how could she give me something so blatantly domestic?!?)....and the time I got kicked out of my junior high Home Ec. class for messing with peoples foot pedals (hilarious!)....and that time I got a cat stuck on my ... A Summer Reading List for YOU
I love to read. I am always in the middle of at least 2 or 3 different books. My nightstand is always littered with a variety of fiction and non-fiction choices. I'm not married to any one genre or author. I enjoy everything from young adult fiction to lengthy biographies and from mysteries to self-help. I'll read just about anything but lately I've been drawn to the classics and those books with a timeless quality. There's just something magical about them...the characters, the adventure, ... The Art of Homemaking: Why I Don’t Have a Summer Bucket List
Every summer I make a list of all the things that we HAVE to do before summer ends. Go to the zoo, make homemade ice cream, go to the planetarium, tour the local museums, visit a barnyard, etc, etc, etc. Then the kids and I try desperately to cram all the activities we listed into our short time together before school starts again. (And then feel guilty if our list isn't completely checked off by the end of August.) ... View the Post
I Need Your Help about a DIY Goodbye…
Right now I'm feeling really torn. For the next three days I am locking myself inside and going through my house to get rid of items that we don't need. It's time to lighten the load...by tons. I can feel it and my husband and kids can feel it. We just have too much stuff. (Seriously...I have stuff coming out my ears...it's time to do some real soul searching and, like the song says...."Let it go!") And while I could (and probably should) write an entire post about this process and how ... View the Post
This is the story of my Golden Blinged Sewing Machine and how I fell in love with sewing.
This is my first sewing machine: Alright...so it wasn't a golden blinged sewing machine when I got it...but it is now. Here's the story: Years ago (and I mean almost 2 decades ago) when I was a newlywed my mom bought me a sewing machine (this sewing my machine as a matter of fact) for Christmas. And I HATED it. REALLY HATED IT. Like...I cried. Why would my mom buy me such an archaic, repressive, stereotypical gift? Me! The girl who hated all things domestic...the girl who would rebelled ... View the Post
On My Mind…(Why I Sew)
For the past few weeks I've been thinking a lot about why I do what I do...specifically, why I sew. I'm not sure what's caused this sudden siege of introspection. I usually go about my business drinking sodas, sewing, playing with the kids, doing laundry, driving the carpool, doing the grocery shopping, mopping the floor, cooking the meals, and embarrassing myself in public all in a whirlwind everyday...and I don't ever stop to think about why I do some of what I do. But over the past few ... View the Post
