Christmas

Gracie’s Scrappy Heart (and other Christmas ideas to make for or with your children)

Last night Grace gave this scrappy handmade heart to her Grandma.  It was her birthday and Grace spent 3 afternoons working on this heart. Sure it's a little funky but it was made by a 4 year old. To make it I just drew a giant heart on a square canvas (purchased at Hobby Lobby) with Elmer's glue.  Then Grace placed scraps all along that glue trail to make the outline of the heart.  Next I smeared glue in sections inside the heart let Grace fill it up with fabric.  We continued this process ... The Art of Homemaking: What Get Measured Gets Done

Several weeks ago when Elizabeth and I got to meet Daryl Hoole we also got to listen to her give an entire lecture on raising children...and I took like a million pages of notes... One of the things that she said that stuck with me was:"What gets measured gets done." I have always liked to make lists and cross things off of them.I make a "Things to do today" list every single day.(It's just one of those habits...I drop off the car pool, go and get a soda, then make my list...every ... Flashback: Yukon Cornelius

It's about this time of year that I am up to my eyeballs in handmade projects...and loving every minute of it.  (Really...I love to have an excuse to "have" to make something.) This year the majority of my gifts will have, at some point, come in contact with a sewing machine...but it hasn't always been this way... Take, for example, Yukon Cornelius: I painted him up for my husband like...oh...7 years ago. (Before I even owned a sewing machine.)  I think the wooden guy was supposed to be ... View the Post

The Any Occasion Skirt Tutorial

So awhile ago I had this idea to make some sort of a skirt for Grace that she could wear for any holiday.  I wanted it to be "festive" but not stuck being just for Christmas or Valentine's Day or whatever.  (Although, let's face it.  I like holiday specific clothing as well...I just posted those angel shirts for crying out loud.) Anyways...thinking one item that can be changed to fit different holidays...this is what I came up with: The Any Occasion Skirt Just a simple skirt with a bow ... View the Post

A Handmade Christmas: Visions of Sugar Plums

I promised you the holiday version of the Morton Salt Girl dress today and here it is.  The only thing I did differently was to lengthen the skirt to make it knee-length and add a ribbon sash.  Otherwise, it is the exact same dress.Purple was the requested color, so I obliged with a dark purple (plum) taffeta and a light purple satin for the lining and ribbon sash around the middle.  And even more lucky for me, the day we did the photo shoot she had just returned from a day of "hair, make-up and ... Color Blocked Bodice Tutorial

A little while ago we were over at icandy handmade sharing a tutorial for Jen and Autie's Basic Bodice Series.  And since I really do like the bodice, and because I did make this dress for her to wear during the holidays I'm sharing the post and tutorial back here on our blog today. (And while I'm sharing this on the blog I'm working at home to finish up a holiday skirt that I am so excited about!  If I hussle I'll have it completed and ready to go for Thursday.  I really hope I get it ...
