Helpful Hints from a Mid-Century Sewing Club.

This last summer I was gifted a package with a few sewing items, some fabric and a small envelope full of sewing patterns and articles from one of my mom's neighbors.  SCORE!!!  (I love gifts like that.)  And as I was going through some sewing supplies I found the package and sat down to read some of the article. One of them was a paper from a Women's Sewing Club (it sounds so enticing....I want to join!) that was a page full of sewing hints and techniques.  I wish there were more, but I will ... Elastic Waistband Shirt Tutorial

This is a shirt that I was messing around with awhile back but never finished. At the time I was looking at a lot of 80's style, over sized, off the shoulder seamed shirts. I finished off the top but never put a hem on it.  I was thinking some kind of high low or asymmetrical kind of look might work but nothing really excited me so I didn't do anything...for a long time....like 6 months...but I finally finished it up yesterday by putting an elastic waistband around the bottom of it.  And ... A Pintucked Zipper Pouch.

I recently needed a thank-you gift for someone that was especially kind to me, so I decided that something handmade one was in order.  I decided on a zipper pouch, but wanted to add a few special details to it--and found that pintucks were just the thing I was looking for. I didn't do a full tutorial but I did run across a "cheat sheet" that I used when I taught a class on making zipper pouches last fall.  (The dimensions of this particular bag are a bit bigger---I did 9" by 11" inch ... Under the Kitchen Countertop Magnet Board

People have asked what my husband does while I'm sewing. Well, this should answer that question.  He makes things...lots of things.Crazy things...all around the house...all of the time.He loves to build and measure and use power tools. Our entire garage has been turned into his personal workshop. Some people might think that would be annoying...but...I'm sitting here in the family room that houses my sewing machine and a shelf full of both sewing and art supplies so you won't hear me ... The Art of Homemaking: Meeting the Minute—Making Use of Carpool Time

This week I've been working on Facet No. 5 "Meet the Minute" from Daryl Hoole's "The Art of Homemaking" book.   The first words of the chapter are:  "An ideal homemaker makes the best use of her time and energy by being efficient...." And then the chapter outlines 10 different ways to become efficient---everything from maintaining good working conditions to eliminating unnecessary steps.  In the weeks to come I'll be working on those steps but this week, after reading the chapter I combined the ...
