My art of homemaking post today is short...but something I have been thinking about a lot lately. The other night we went to Hannie's play performance for her elementary school. Our four year old sat bright-eyed and watched every bit of action while seated sometimes on his own chair and sometimes on his aunt's lap. And after it was over he smiled, yawned and walked up to me. "Uppie, mama," he said. And I looked down into his eyes a bit surprised because he hadn't said those words in a long ... View the Post
2015 Word of the Year: Araneae
Last month we were asked by the SNAP CONFERENCE to share our word for 2015 over on their site. The word I chose was "Araneae". I know....it's not even a verb...but after a lot of thinking I realized it was the only word that I could pick for this year...and if you are wondering why that is you can read on. ... View the Post
The Art of Homemaking: On Guard
Recently my kids have been on a Robin Hood watching binge...so the movie is playing all the time in the background of whatever we are doing...and the other day I over heard something I'd never paid attention to before. It was the phrase, "On Guard". Before Robin Hood attacks his opponent he always puts them on alert by shouting "On Guard!" And not only does Robin Hood afford that luxury to his opponents but the bad guys even follow suit. "On Guard!" they shout before swinging their ... View the Post
The Art of Homemaking–Kindness Matters
I have been thinking about kindness lately in lots of different areas of my life. I was at school performance last month and was a bit late so I was sitting in the back...and halfway during the performance I couldn't even hear a thing on at the front because so many parents were talking (loudly) in the back. I felt badly, mostly because I was a teacher and I full-well knew the hours that had gone in to teaching the kids those songs. I felt badly that half of the room was talking so loudly and ... The Art of Homemaking–Second Chances
Last week we had one of those days. You know the ones...where everyone is grumpy and on edge. I had one child that could not stop whining, crying or complaining about every little thing that was happening; another that was turning easy homework into Mt. Everest; and yet another who felt their sole purpose in life that day was to bug the other two. And to top it off...I had a headache of the century. You know one of those headaches that ends up being behind one of your eyes and is so bad you ... View the Post
The Art of Homemaking: Just Fold It
I don't know if the scene is the same at your house...but laundry really is one thing that I am not good at. My mom, well, she's an expert. She loves laundry. In fact when we were waiting for our house to be finished last spring, we lived with my parents for about a month and she made the deal that she would do all the laundry if I would do all the cooking. Score! (She thought she had the better deal...but no way, I totally had the better deal!) I have tried so many different things, one ... View the Post
